# Mix a block palette

Fill the palette with up to five blocks, so that every stroke places a random block from them.

![Brush menu with a palette of one block: stone in palette slot 1 at 100 percent, and palette slots 2 to 5 empty, shown as barriers](https://862810040-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3dAk0UjgUbQUOWgnpUwe%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5bfd0668a3bc3f53d2759887cb64cf96145c3234%2Fmenu-sphere-default.svg?alt=media)

## What you need

* The brush item and the `bettergopaint.use` permission.
* Solid blocks in your inventory. Items and non-solid blocks, such as torches, are ignored.

## Steps

1. Left-click the brush item to open the brush menu.
2. Pick up a block from your inventory and left-click the first empty palette slot (the bottom row, slots 46 to 50). The block appears there.
3. Repeat for each block, filling the slots from the left. The palette holds at most five blocks.
4. To replace a block, left-click its slot with another block.
5. To remove a block, right-click its slot. The blocks after it move one slot to the left.
6. Close the menu.

Each slot shows its percentage. Every block has the same chance: 100 divided by the number of blocks, rounded down. Three blocks give 33% each, five give 20% each.

## What the palette does

* Each stroke picks one block per position at random from the palette.
* The same block in two slots gets both shares. A palette of stone, stone and gravel gives stone 67%.
* A palette with no blocks paints nothing. Removing the last block stops the brush.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.onelitefeather.net/for-builders/mix-a-block-palette.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
