# Paint a path with the Paint brush

Paint a curved strip of blocks through the points you click, for example a road or a river bed.

![Paint brush shape, top view and side cross-section: the painted blocks follow a curve through the clicked points](https://862810040-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3dAk0UjgUbQUOWgnpUwe%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-65181aaed742f3e238285e22026da30ea229d338%2Fpaint-brush.svg?alt=media)

## What you need

* The brush item (the feather by default) and the `bettergopaint.use` permission.
* A palette with at least one block. See [Mix a block palette](/for-builders/mix-a-block-palette.md).

## Steps

1. Left-click the brush item to open the brush menu.
2. Shift-click the **Selected Brush type** item in the second row, then click **Paint Brush** in the list.
3. Close the menu.
4. Right-click the block where the path starts. Chat shows `Paint brush point #1 set`.
5. Right-click each further point. Every click adds one point and shows its number.
6. Hold Shift (sneak) and right-click the last point. The stroke paints the curve through all points.

To start a new path, right-click again without sneaking.

{% endhint %}

## Limits

* One stroke holds at most **256 points**. A click without sneaking after the 256th point is refused with the message `Paint brush stroke is full`. Sneak and right-click to paint the stroke with the points it has.
* Air along the path stays air. Only blocks are changed.
* **Brush Size** (slot 14 in the menu) sets the size of the brush that is moved along the path. **Falloff Strength** (slot 12) makes the edges of that brush fade.

## Result

The whole stroke is one history entry. `//undo` takes back all of it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.onelitefeather.net/for-builders/paint-a-path-with-the-paint-brush.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
