# Shape cliffs with the Angle brush

Paint only the steep faces of a cliff, and leave the flat ground and the gentle slopes unchanged.

![Angle brush shape, top view and side cross-section: only the steep face of the cliff is painted](https://862810040-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3dAk0UjgUbQUOWgnpUwe%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-adeb645794cb71f0c151c71195eff9f876a32094%2Fangle-brush.svg?alt=media)

## What you need

* The brush item and the `bettergopaint.use` permission.
* A palette with the block you want on the cliff face. See [Mix a block palette](/for-builders/mix-a-block-palette.md).

## Steps

1. Left-click the brush item to open the brush menu.
2. Shift-click the **Selected Brush type** item, then click **Angle Brush** in the list.
3. Left-click the **Angle Check Distance** item (slot 12) to raise it. Right-click to lower it. The range is 1 to 5, the default is 2.
4. Left-click the **Maximum Angle** item (slot 13) to raise the angle by 5 degrees. Right-click to lower it by 5. Shift-click to change it by 15. The range is 10.0 to 85.0, the default is 40.0.
5. Close the menu and right-click the foot of the cliff, or the face itself.

## How the two settings act

* The brush measures the slope over the check distance. A block is painted when its slope is at least the angle in **Maximum Angle**. A higher angle paints fewer blocks, and only the steeper faces.
* Ground that is almost flat is never painted, whatever the angle.
* The slope is measured across the check distance on both sides of the block.

The label says *Maximum Angle*, but the value is the smallest slope that is painted.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.onelitefeather.net/for-builders/shape-cliffs-with-the-angle-brush.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
